Glasgow Central Upper Level Refurbishment

Hi,
I'm specifically referring to the upstairs section above the shops on the right as you face the departure boards.
Upstairs used to have a bar on both sides with stair and lift access.
This has been 'under refurbishment' for what seems like years now (maybe it is years) - has this been abandoned or is there any opening schedule set?

Wetherspoons were recently granted permission to open a new bar/restaurant in the unit above Boots and M&S:

It will be the sixth Wetherspoons venue in the City Centre.

Conditional planning approval has been granted for the opening of a new Wetherspoons bar and restaurant in Glasgow Central Station.

The national food and drink chain look set to move into Unit 17 in the station, which is on the first floor above Boots and M&S Simply Food, near the Hope Street exit.

Glasgow City Council planning documents state the decision to approve the application was granted on July 20.

A comment within states: "The proposed works will not detract from the historic character of the building and will not be detrimental to its appearance. As such, it is recommended that listed building consent to be granted, subject to conditions."

Two conditions of the planning approval include: "no secondary ventilation grilles shall be fitted in the glazed areas of window on the elevation facing the main station concourse" and "No internal partitions shall be erected which will effect windows.", obstacles which are both likely to be overcome.

The bar and restaurant chain confirmed that an opening date is yet to be determined.

Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “We are pleased that planning permission has been granted for the pub.

“We will be applying for a new licence in due course.

“We have enjoyed great success in Glasgow and are keen to open one of our pubs at Glasgow Central.

“We believe it would be welcomed by travellers and be an asset to the station itself.

“At this stage there are no on site or opening dates."

Wetherspoons currently operate out of several Glasgow city centre locations including The Counting House, The Society Room, The Crystal Palace, The Sir John Moore and The Hengler's Circus.

A council spokeswoman said: "We welcome the addition of Wetherspoons which will add to the vibrancy and amenity of the area."

An Italian restaurant (Prezzo) is to move into the unit above Krispy Kreme and Costa:

Prezzo will take over Unit 16 with a roof terrace above Krispy Kremes and Costa in the station where Bonapartes used to be.

An exact date of opening is not yet known.

Glasgow City Council’s Licensing Board officially granted the company an alcohol licence for the premises on Friday.

Concerns were raised about potential underage drinking so a limit of 10pm for unaccompanied minors was set.

Chloe Postlethwaite, lawyer representing the restaurant chain, said: “A new Prezzo restaurant would be a welcome addition to the station.

“This is especially for people coming through, as I don’t think Glasgow Central Station has an area where people can have a sit-down meal.

“It’d be a great new addition.”

Prezzo only just announced in March it was to close one of its Glasgow stores at the Fort.

However, the city centre train station may be an easier sell than in the Fort at Easterhouse.

It is not known exactly how many jobs it will bring but most Prezzos have around nine to 14 staff, the restaurant said in March.

Councillors also heard how Prezzo wishes to put on the occasional live performance.

However, councillors raised concerns about potential unaccompanied 17-year-olds being able to drink there until late.

Councillor Matt Kerr, chair of the Licensing Board, said: “Teenagers on date nights is perfectly easonable, of course. The question mark is over whether they would be able to sit there until 1am on their own?”

As a result, the lawyer put in a change to the application to say unaccompanied under-18s would be ejected at 10am.

Ms Postlethwaite added: “There will be measures in place and staff in the restaurant at all times.

“The idea is to allow 16, 17-year- have a meal and sit down and have a nice time.

“If there were any troublemakers, Prezzo would have a policy to deal with that.

“It’s not anything outwith what the usual restaurant expectations are.”

Prezzo was granted a licence to sell alcohol from 11am to 1am.

For those of us a certain age that's where the old departure board used to be.

I know that many have differing opinions of Wetherspoon's but good to know that something seems to be moving at last - I certainly am pleased they seem to be opening. I don't know anything really about Prezzo but, again, it can only be good news. Thanks for the speedy reply btw - disappointed I didn't see the announcement being publicised anywhere given it only dates back a couple of weeks or so.

Whetherspoon's tend to make a decent job in refurbishing buildings with character, whether they are listed or not.
