I've never been able to find (what I wuld consider) reasonable priced tickets on this route, can anyone help with split tickets, etc.

There are never any deals on the direct routes, comes in around £145 return, no cheap advance singles.

Even factoring in all the airport costs it is still far far cheaper to fly but I'd rather get the train.

For example the first weeked in March going down on Friday and coming back Sunday, or even Monday if it was going to work out a lot cheaper.

i just came up with glasgow to bristol parkway at £70 (use of 2 advanced singles rather than returns glasgow-bpw £35 each way, fare limited to very few services on my selected date of 11/1/11, returning 18/1/11) and advanced single £3 each way parkway to cardiff on all off peak services. returns from glasgow to bpw is same as your glasgow - cdf return fare quoted above,

Manchester may be a good bet, as you can combine a TPE Advance and a ATW advance.

Crewe may work for Virgin plus ATW.

Or you could try splitting at Birmingham (and possibly Bristol Parkway or Bristol Temple Meads too)

OP said first weekend in March. Quick search reveals £57 on selected fares, going on Friday 4th March, coming back on the Sunday. Splitting at Manchester, £31 to Manchester, £26 to Cardiff (these cheapest advance singles x 2)

The worst you can do with these advances is around £70.

...yeah what I was going to suggest, I got ticket few days before travelling from edinburgh to manchester piccadilly for only 14.95 so I'm guessing they'll have something similar for glasgow to manchester piccadilly...

edit: using yp rail card mind...

If you got that from the TPE website, that'll be double the price without a Railcard, as TPE offer 50% discounts for YP Railcard holders. The cheapest fare is apparently £12 (£6 with a YP) but I suspect this has very limited availability.
