On days that I am going work I set my alarm for 4.50 am and get up then, however even on non working days, I still get up about that time or maybe by 5.15. It's not too much of a hardship, although a bit easier in the spring/summer. My mates think it's mad getting up then if you don't need to, but I can get a lot of things done before the day had really started, then be a bit more leisurely for the of the day.

The chap at my local ticket office get up at 4 am even on non working days too.

Does anyone else enjoy getting up early?

Well, I get up at 0545 for school (I take the bus, and I live a fair bit away) but in general, I don't sleep for long periods: could go to bed at 2300 after a long play on the Xbox or PC, and wake up at 0600, not a bit tired, and go back to the video games...:)

Sine moving jobs in May I've been getting up at 5am to catch the train to work Monday-Friday, used to be up at 6am. After that, on some Saturdays, I'm up at 4am to go out on the train. It's a lot easier in summer, I was usually out of bed before the alarm went off.

Usually have a lie in on Sundays though, til about 7am!

It is generally supposed to be better for you to get up at the same time every day, although I personally don't follow that advice myself...!!

I envy you guys. I seem to be unable to get up any earlier than 9am without a great deal of effort. Which is quite problematic since I'm meant to be at work by 7:30.

I'm not a morning person, so I don't tend to be up before 10am, though I don't usually go to bed until at least 2-3am.
At work I tend to swap my shifts for backshifts, ideally the 12-12 ones, though anything starting after 9am is fine. If I'm finishing work after midnight, I'll usually go to bed around 3.30-4am and be up again around 11ish.

Depending on my timetable, I'm either up at 6:50, 8:30 or 9:00am, the earliet I've got up recently was 5:40 for the retro HST powercars.

Spent seven years getting up at 6am on weekdays. When I got home from work around 3.30/4pm used to have an hour long nap which meant bedtime could be safely 11-11.30pm!

Weekends were always a lie-in though.

Yeah, I seem to wake up at 6am regardless of the day unless I've been out drinking the night before, that's usually Saturdays so on Sunday I'll have a lie-in...:D

I get up around 7am during the week and somewhere between 9 and 10 on weekends.

I never seem to get enough sleep though

When I'm at work, I'm always up at 06:30 so it gives me plenty of time to get ready and get to work before 8 o'clock. At the weekend, it depends what I'm doing, but I usually get up no later than 8 o'clock. I like to sleep for about seven hours, but if I only get five or six that's usually sufficient.

If I'm going for a day out on the rails, then depending what I've got planned I can be up as early as 5 o'clock, although that's rare.

I'd love to do this, but shift work precludes it!
This week, I'll be up at 5am all week and in bed by no later than 10pm.
But next week, I'll go to bed a little later (11-11.30pm) and be up about 9-9.30am. In an ideal world, when I set no alarms and have no pressing need to get up at a certain time, I find that I naturally sleep about ten hours so this shift is perfect.

There are days where I am at work by 0400. Getting up early isn't the problem.

When I'm on lates I find that I'm up till 0300 after getting home. I'm then into bed and back awake by 0900. It can be a bit of a struggle to get through the next shift as I can't sleep during the day.

Switching shifts is the killer.

6hrs sleep and I pretty much wake up. It takes about a week of not working and keeping regular hours for me to catch up and I can push out 8(ish) hours.

I agree, I hate having to rush in the mornings, I like at least two hours between getting out of my pit and leaving home. Time to have a shave, shower, tea and a bit of breakfast, bathroom, look at emails etc.

I also do get up extra early sometimes if going on a railtour or trip, many of which have very early starts and I have to get the first train which is at 5.20 or 6 am on Sats. I think the most recent one of these meant that I had to get up at 3.30 am. I got back home about 2330, so did allow myself a lay in until about 6am the next day.

If I do get up more than about 30 minutes late, I feel discombobulated for the rest of the day.

When I worked shifts on the railway and in the Royal Mail, I hated the very early starts. Colleagues used to love them, and say they had plenty of time in the day to do other stuff, but I'd feel so rough that as soon as I got home I'd have to have a nap for an hour at least.

Now that I'm older I tend to get up earlier than I used to, and it's not unusual for me to have walked the dog, done the hoovering and the washing up before I head off to my part time job at 0820 (I'm off today!)

I usually get up at 7 on my days off and I like it. It makes your day a little longer. On my working days, however, I get up around 6 just to eat a small breakfast, brush my teeth, take a shower and be ready to go to work.

4:45 is way too early to be waking up!

I'm the mornings biggest enemy me, for work I have to be there for 9:00, so I wake up at 07:25, more than plenty enough time to get ready. The weekends however, depending on what I'm doing I usually set the alarm for 10:15, though waking up early during the week usually means I'm awake by 09:30. I'm just a deep sleeper! I'm usually in bed for 11:30-midnight.

When I was at school and college and had to be there for 9, I was still asleep by 08:30. Hell I'm one deep sleeper.

About once a week, my alarm is set for 04:25, it's absolutely horrible to drag myself out of bed. Once I'm outside, it's a bit better, but still.

Needless to say, my lie in until 12:30 yesterday felt absolutely amazing

I'm the opposite: on Tuesdays I get up before 4:30am to be on the Flying Scotsman or the first Easyjet flight from Edinburgh to Gatwick, and manage this no problem; yet frequently on Wednesdays and Thurdays I struggle to drag myself out of bed in time to get to East Croydon station in time to be at Victoria by 8:30am... in fact some Mondays and Fridays crossing the hall from bedroom to spare room by that time is a challenge.

I used to have to wake at 03:45 for my job on the railway (04:45 start). Finished around 1pm, but I was always exhausted so the early finish was no good for me. It also meant that I couldn't enjoy Sunday's as I had to be in bed early for the Monday again, so all in all it was a bit crap and I'm glad I don't do that anymore, even though the job itself was good.

I now get up at 05:45 which I can just about tolerate. Personally, I consider anything that involves getting up before 07:00 uncivilised, but it's a necessary evil. I rarely sleep past 08:00 now though on my rest days, purely out of habit.

I used to have to get up at 0530 for the 0618 train for an 0700 start. Fine in Summer - but a bit hard in winter. Earlies bad enough - but nothing beats a night shift for a killer around 0300 - 0400 when you just wanted to keel over somewhere.

I still get up (now retired) around 0700 out of habit - better than the previous times - if onl to "maximise" daylight in the winter period.

I wake up at 0545 every day and cycle the three miles from Woking to West Byfleet to catch the stopper (it's a fitness thing!).

On my days off, if I'm at home I can lie in until at least 11 sometimes. If I'm travelling, 4am starts aren't unknown...

I rather like walking around places in the very early morning.

I love a stupidly early start. Really enjoy the 0400 starts at work, get to be up several hours before the rest of the world.

I've got to admit, I do enjoy my really early starts on days out, especially in the winter.

Yes, I know what you mean, it's good to be up and about when most people are still in doors. It's nice and peaceful.

I have always hated being late, I think that goes back many many years to my school days when you were in serious trouble if you were late arriving at school, even if only by a few minutes. Teachers or prefects put your name on a list if you were late and you had to be in early for the rest of the week. Plus you were awarded lines to be written out during detentions.

I'm normally up at about 6 on a weekday even if I'm on holiday. Weekends are the same but I turn over and go back to sleep for an hour. I'm a morning person as like others above I like the peace and quiet.

I am up at 0630 every day of the week without an alarm. It is years of conditioning! That gives me 30 minutes to deal with my ablutions and get to the station for my train. I am in work by 0730 and eat my breakfast there.

I've never been a heavy sleeper and I'm up most days before 6, 7 at the latest, and out walking the dog and I usually meet the same fellow dog walkers every morning. The air is nice and fresh and for me laying in bed is just a waste of life, I seem to need less sleep as I get older.

I have to get up at times varying from just after 1am to just after 1pm for my shifts at work (also railway!). I used to hate getting up for earlies, which can start as early as 0300ish where I am. However, I now find the main issue is being able to sleep early enough in the evening before the first one, and maintaining sufficient hours of sleep after that - getting up, per se, is not much of an issue most of the time now, even if it's freezing cold or wet out, apart from maybe the 5th or 6th early if I'm unfortunate enough to have that rostered. The quality of the work itself is often better - the breaks often a bit longer, and the duties themselves, bar a few, shorter. I also love sunrises in obscure parts of the country, and seeing everyone else wake up.

On the other hand, I find it nigh on impossible to now get up around 7-8am - it's between the early and late shift starts which I do, and therefore is only natural on days off, meaning I have no contractual obligation to actually be anywhere, and so I end up having a massive lie in! I find it easier to wake for my usual shiftwork alarm calls - and in fact that's a benefit if, say, I'm going on holiday, as I'm the slightly smug person who's wide awake at 0400 before an early flight or drive!

Apart from when the neighbours are making a racket (other issues can be prevented with a blackout blind and the fact that I am oblivious to natural noises whilst sleeping, like thunder or high winds) I find it even better to be sleeping later for late turns or even night turns. I generally get a longer sleep, going to bed just before the sun rises if it's summer, and usually getting 8 or so hours, compared to the 6 or so that I usually bother to get on earlies!

I usually have to leave an average of 1 hour to get into work with a bit of leeway (the actual travelling time is often somewhat less) and like an hour before that to get ready without any last-minute rushing. Everything is neatly timed including my walk to the station. I used to end up in a mad panic because I basically left 20 minutes too few - now I'd rather get up earlier but be calmer, which I find is often better for my mental wellbeing.

When I'm switching from earlies to lates I regularly have a 21-23 hour day between them, sometimes a bit less. It can't do me any good but I'm not realistically often going to sleep well for 11-12 hours even if I'm shattered. As has been alluded to, lates to earlies is the real killer. If I'm on earlies, I generally find I hate napping, as I naturally end up trying to have my "main" sleep as soon as I hit the pillow. I'm often really tired by the middle of the day but know I won't feel right unless I put off going to bed until the evening, resulting in a wasted afternoon.
