When it comes to top speed, it also needs to be remembered that the 185s are geared for 100mph running, so they might not even be able to reach 100mph without over-revving the engine. At some point it's likely the rev limiter would kick in and acceleration would stop. Also they are not exactly streamlined, so would not be that efficient at 125mph. To be certified at 125mph they would need to be tested up to at least 137.5mph (10% overspeed).

so what happens then? Do they manage to keep to time on the Leeds - Hull section?

They comfortably keep time. I've done the 16:40 off Hull several times, always a 185 and it is timetabled to take exactly the same time as every other Hull to Leeds service (just under an hour) and it has always arrived bang on time. Done the journey on a 185 the other way, same result on time arrival at Hull.
