Getting off early?

I have a off peak day return virgin only ticket from Macclesfield to Manchester for Friday but on the outward trip i want to get off at Stockport which is the station before Manchester and on way back will be getting on at Manchester.

so on the outward can i do this getting off early?

they do have Ticket people that check tickets so dont want to risk it if im not allowed.

That is fine, as the ticket allows Break of Journey. The only restriction on a Macclesfield - Manchester Off Peak Day Return (Route Virgin Trains Only) is:

OUTWARD TRAVEL
By any train except those
timed to depart Mondays to
Fridays before 0915

RETURN TRAVEL
By any train

It might not work the barrier (assuming there are barriers at Stockport, never having used the station I don't know!) but it is valid

There is no restriction for breaking your journey on this particular ticket. You are at liberty to finish your journey short at Stockport if you wish.

Break of journey should always be permitted on Day tickets.

Break of journey is permitted unless it is "made clear" in notices & publications that it isn't.

No barriers - just the usual G4S crowd who stand in the subway at the entrance to the Manchester bound platforms only and accept anything which looks remotely like a rail ticket.

Any reason why they only check tickets at the entrance to the Manchester bound platforms, and not the southbound platforms ?

They usually have a table and sell tickets as well as checking them. This could be that many people enter the station from the Edgeley side and therefore pass the northbound platforms in order to get to the ticket hall, this makes it more convenient to buy tickets at the bottom of the steps upto platforms 3 & 4 and many regular passengers simply buy their tickets here.
For southbound journies, I think the assumption is that the majority who leave trains at Stockport will be from Piccadilly where G4S check tickets before boarding, or are longer distance ATW/XC/VT services which they should not check tickets for as they are not 'agents' for these operators.

I believe that if they ask you for your ticket, you must present it for inspection even if they are not agents for the TOC you happened to use. See the thread at http://www.railforums.co.uk/showthread.php?t=72179

They do indeed check everyone who arrives into platforms 3 & 4, and are there until early evening most days. I've been checked arriving from EUS after 10pm a couple of times.
I probably worded my response badly in so much as they work on behalf of Northern, therefore southbound services by Northern will already have been checked at Piccadilly, and longer distance services by ATW/VT/XC are not their problem. Some of the chaps who work Stockport even know a little about validity as one reminded me I couldn't use my coast and peaks until after 0845 a few weeks ago.

Strange that they work on behalf on Northern rail when it's a Virgin station.

Not especially. Where the operator of a station doesn't check tickets there either because they expect them to have been checked on train or are blasé about it, it is entirely reasonable for the agents of a different TOC which calls there to take responsibility for ticket checking for its trains.
