Looking at making a journey from Germany and Austria and return (Nuremberg to Kufstein to be exact). I have a FIP pass through work. How do I go about looking if I can book tickets on this route using this?

Thanks in advance, I'm a bit of a novice when it comes to European rail travel and our resident European rail traveller at our depot is on leave at the moment.

(Looking at travelling out on 15th July and return 17th July. Would also concider training it all the way from London if its cheaper then flying!)

Apply here for your coupons and it is KOSTENLOS!

http://www.raildeliverygroup.com/files/Publications/services/rst/RST_XX09b_IntCoupEmp.html

Of course you'll have to pay the FIP fare for the Eurostar if you want to go that way as it is a globally priced train. Or you can take Southeastern to DVP and P&O over to Calais for a grand total of £3.00 pp on your priv card.. Or theres also the Stena option through Harwich en Hoek van Holland but its a bus on the other side into Rotterdam at the moment while the metro works are going on.. Again, travel is free with £5.00 port tax.

Depending what routes you want to take onto München und Kufstein, apply for SNCF, SNCB/NMBS, NS, DB and ÖBB coupons and use almost any train you like unless its a TGV or Thalys,-(or Meridian down in the Chiemgau)!

Hope this helps. :)

Have you applied for your coupons already? If so, then Ja! They will be valid on that and any other ICE/EC/IC/EX/RB/RE trains you like! Just not valid on the private operators -(avoid M and ALX trains). That EuroCity from München should be composed of ÖBB Eurofima stock with the old school compartments and comfy seating that you can fold down almost like a bed! The Austrian resto wagen also serves up some pretty good cheap local food and beer too!

Gute Reise! :D

Cheers for the help. All sorted. Coupons arrived yesterday. Could have paid £4.50 per train for my seat reservations but being a tight fister Yorkshire man I was happy to save my money.

Only worry is getting the 2124 train back to Nuremberg, hoping I don't fall asleep and end up on a German depot. Cheap local food and beer sounds good though.

Try and do the DB museum in Nuremberg , but allow time. Superb. A few euros.

Sadly not got time. Under estimated Nuremberg when I book my flights, land at 4pm on the Saturday and leave first thing Sunday morning.

Already looking at going back so will bare it in mind.

You won't need reservations on this trip. The worst that happens is that you may have to stand on the ICE train for a bit but this very rarely happens: they are longer than our typical UK train. And, although FIPs are not valid on the private operator, in practice they seem to be often accepted by the conductors so check if you want use some of Meridian trains when you are there. As Chief Planner says, the DB Museum is really cool, one of the top 3-4 rail museums in Europe: can you change your flight times to squeeze it in? Or make a 2nd trip during the three months the FIP is valid for...?:)

Will bear it in mind for the future! Sadly, my life revolves around the dog that lives in our house so I have limited time out there.

The group tickets (länder, Quer-Durchs_Land, or happy weekend - depending on when you travel and if you stay in one state or not) are real money savers. Although they are only on regional trains, many of those are fast. You can check the times on bahn.de.

If you don't have time for the museum on the Saturday evening, a trip on the tram down to the RBf is well worth it. It's a huge freight yard but also has a large loco depot. Last time I went round (on a Saturday morning) there were 70-80 locos there. Let me know if you're interested and need directions, there's a very good walking route you can take on weekends that will get you around the loco depot without having to contend with security or the huge fences that were put up a few years ago. The round trip from Nuremberg Hbf should take no more than 2 hours.
