Just a reminder that the 6 Nations starts this weekend which means one thing the WAG set works Ruggex's. Should also be out Saturday 15th March as well as this upcoming Saturday.

This Saturday is a 1430 kick off and last time their was a 1430 kick off the set did 0807 Holyhead-Cardiff (via Crewe)/1821 Cardiff-Holyhead (via Wrexham) but as always with the WAG on Ruggex's it will not be known until nearer the time

It's not in the system yet - the only ones I can see are the normal timetabled ones.

I assume the entire service is laid on just to use the rake as a queue-buster when the match has finished, and that the southbound journey is just a positioning move. If that's the case, perhaps we should be glad that it doesn't go down as ECS!

It would appear you are correct,however a spare set lies idle at Canton,why not use that if the intention is post match,just a thought.

Because it may be full otherwise leaving the rugby fans unable to travel - which kind of defeats the object of a rugby special

According to many reports, the up Gerald carries less than 20 being unadvertised.(Source colleagues having used it)

You would still require a south bound movement to get this stock back.

I haven't heard of any "Meet the Manager" sessions for some considerable time now. If one was to be held at some time, the non-advertising of this train would be an appropriate. FGW hold regular sessions.

I've found a STP working for a northbound run: 1W88 departing Cardiff at 1821. No sign of a southbound working yet.

PS: It's listed as trailing 280 tonnes, wheres the Gerallt Gymro normally trails 140 tonnes.

Gerald is normally formed 2+4 I believe, but the rugex (in 57+mrk2 days) used to be loco + 6 coaches (2+5/6 in the case of the mrk3s, using the 1st class buffet rather than all six standards as was the case with the mark2s).

Could be...when I travelled down on it a couple of years ago (to Newport) it was pretty empty to Abergavenny but from there and following stations it filled up quite nicely. Didn't travel on the return, though. Any rugby fan from the north would have travel arrangements sorted long before ATW announce that this special would run.
If they wanted to fill it from the north I'm sure they could, if it was advertised well in advance in conjunction with WRU, specials have been run from Cardiff to Edinburgh recently, but I think that was for a weekend stay.

It will be interesting then to know the loadings on the extra "Gerald" [1W88 - 1821 ex Cardiff] last night.
My wife returned from Manchester, changing at Chester on to the 2032 [1W96 -1721 ex Cardiff] and found the 2-car unit full and standing from Chester, with most of the seats occupied by Rugby fans.
At least they were happy!

I travelled on Gerald this week for the first time, Chester to Shrewsbury. Very comfortable but what an incredibly slow trip. I am too used to travelling Virgin. That said give me loco hauled and sufficient coaches any time over a DMU.
