Well we can't expect the Chancellor to understand such delicate money matters can we ;)

Seems he's now paid the £160 to upgrade. Sadly, less of a story now as we've only got one side of the story (for all we know, he didn't actually fuss over upgrading but was moaning about the price).

Breaking news: George Osborne pays £160 to stay in first class!
A 1st class single costs more than that, so must have been an excess.

Which we will end up paying, when he slap's it on his expenses.

Not sure if this is true - but Rachel Townsend (a Granada TV correspondent) is Tweeting from a train to Euston where George Osborn is arguing with a guard over refusing to leave first class despite having a standard class ticket.

First Class single fares are £189.50 on the day for Wilmslow-London. Some Advance tickets for standard class are around £30 so the difference is around £160.

Yeah, pity really. I wouldn't hold it against him if he wanted space to work or if he's using his own money but I guess it's something we'll never know

I hope they do him for fare evasion

Unlikely now he's agreed to pay the £160. Hopefully the London based journalists are on to the story to demand answers off him when he arrives at Euston.

There may have been table seats available in the Quiet Coach in standard class.

If it's out of his private pocket (and let's face it, he has a few bob) then it's his own business.

I do hope this story sticks to the facts though, especially if the reporter did point out she was in a different carriage (so won't necessarily have seen or heard everything that happened).

Not that the truth will stop Labour having a field day with this one!

Time for a new thread?

Why didnt he just buy a first class ticket in the first place, if he thinks that the guards are not going to check his tickets then he needs his head looking at

It's on the ticker on BBC News too.. so this story is going to be quite huge even though it's actually a non-story given he paid (and presumably the aide did too). Someone has even said much the same to the Sky Tweet above.

Lots of other Tweets suggesting he should have been fined, so as usual Joe Public believe guards have that power!

What is going to be odd is that most people usually attack train staff and call them jobsworths if they try such a thing - but clearly as George Osborne is disliked - suddenly it's okay.

Maybe guards can say 'And you'd like it if we let George Osborne off too?' from now on! Bam!

If he was abusive towards the TM then he deserves to be prosecuted.

Numerous tweets going around praising the ticket inspector for making Osborne pay up now.

Agreed, he did the right thing getting Osborne to cough up. But on reflection, he'd have been better evading the reporter's question. Easier said than done in the excitement of the moment
