Today, I went to get the 0746 from Birchwood to Manchester. This is the Liverpool to Scarborough service. The train was cancelled for us at Birchwood and also at Liverpool South Parkway due to a train fault. However, this train managed to make it to Scarborough, stopping at quite a few other stations on the way but missing out some other smaller stations in Yorkshire. It went thundering through Birchwood, late but looking very far from being faulty.

So, the question is - what sort of fault could lead to the train only stopping at selected stations? Or, as the cynical person in me is thinking, is it just a made up excuse to make up some time on the service?

It could be any fault on the train (or even another train) that caused it to be delayed originally. But missing out stops is a sure fire way of helping a train to make up time so that it arrives on time or - as in this case - less late than it would have done. Note that any train that misses out any booked calling point automatically counts as a performance failure, and is thus not counted as being 'on time' even if it arrives at final destination inside the relevant threshold.

However in this case, the train arrived at Scarborough in sufficient time to make it's booked turnaround, and departed back towards Liverpool on time. Which gives it a better chance of being on time at destination. Although not today.

I believe it was a door fault which delayed this train at Liverpool South Parkway for 13 mins.
