I recall that he bought the ancient monument called Stonehenge.

Indeed he did. He attended an auction held by Knight, Frank & Rutley in the Palace Theatre, Salisbury on 21 September 1915, having supposedly gone to purchase some dining-room chairs for his wife. He paid £6,600 (around £900,000 nowadays) as he felt Stonehenge should be owned by a local man; he had been born in Shrewton on the Plain and lived in Salisbury. Three years later he donated it to the nation and was knighted a year later. What his wife said as it was really her money and whether she did get the chairs is lost to history.
