In 1925 Victor Lustig, pretending to be a French government official, sold the Eiffel Tower twice by pretending it cost the government too much to maintain and so was being sold as scrap metal.
The first guy was so embarrassed he didn’t even tell anyone.

For those who like such things, an episode of the comedy panel show Citation Needed is devoted to Mr Lustig, available on YouTube, a thoroughly recommended watch. I've always found it ironic that his surname is German for "funny".
Anyway, next question: Why can't Stilton cheese be made in Stilton?
