Would it be right to say it isn’t actually a law, but more a piece of data analysis?

Anyhow, it’s the observation that in datasets the first digits of the numbers are more likely to be low numbers rather than high numbers.

Obviously the reason is that datasets tend to be weighted towards lower numbers. For example if I had a dataset that was “house numbers on my street”, where the highest numbered house is 38, there are only 6/37ths (there’s no 13) beginning with digits 4 to 9

Possibly explains why the (wheelie bin) number '1' is most likely to have sold out at many hardware stores / garden centres. :s

It's a law in the scientific sense and anyone interested might try applying it to station usage statistics.

It doesn't really apply to your street numbers where there are similar numbers beginning 1, 2 and 3 as the range needs to cover several orders of magnitude where you find about 30% beginning with 1, 18% with 2, 13% with 3 etc.

Give me a sequence of seven valid words in English starting with a word of a single letter and then successively adding one letter each time to the beginning or end of the preceding word to create a new word, ending with a seven letter word

For example I - IN - BIN etc etc
