Probably not the answer but they are both in counties also beginning with the letter S (Staffordshire and Somerset respectively).

Ah - well, no he wasn't. He managed to be conveniently out of the way when the pen came round. But regicides play a big part in the story,

There's a clue in the word "betrayal" - and in the fact that Downing Street was built by and named after the man in question long after the restoration of the monarchy in 1660.

Did he turn on his former pro-Cromwell associates and turn them in? Possibly he got a grant of the land that became Downing St as a reward.

That'll do. Sir George Downing was a strong supporter of Cromwell, joining the New Model Army as a chaplain and reportedly encouraging the trial and subsequent execution of Charles I but not being a signatory to his death warrant. During the Commonwealth period he acted as Cromwell's spymaster in Europe, running an intelligence network from a base in Holland. Once Cromwell died, he realised which way the wind was blowing and started to ingratiate himself with the court of Charles II, then in exile. After the restoration in 1660 he lured three of the "regicides" whom he had known well and were hiding in Germany, including John Okey who had been his CO and a close friend in the army, to meet him in Holland. Downing kidnapped them and smuggled them back to England, to a summary trial and death by being hung, drawn and quartered. He didn't get a grant of land but he became a successful financier and property developer (including developing the Downing Street area) and died a rich man.

To continue in the same area. What is the origin of the name Pall Mall, the London Street rather than any other uses of the words?

It was a regency shopping street populated with dating agencies, so people could go to the mall to find a pal

This is the answer. It was where they had played a ball game called pall mall, although there are several different variations of the name’s spelling; it was a forerunner of croquet.
