@DarloRich may know more about him. Believe Wharton started off his footballing career as a goalkeeper for Darlington in the mid 1880s, before turning professional.

Wharton played in goal as an amateur for Darlington in 1885-1886 and then joined Preston North End getting to an FA Cup semi final in 1886-87. He left Preston to concentrate on his running ( becoming the first person to run the 100 yards in 10 seconds) before joined Rotherham Town in division 2 and then Sheffield United in division 1. He played 3 top flight games ( as understudy to Fatty Foulkes) for the Blades becoming the first black person to play top flight football. He played for various other non league clubs and then played in the second division with Stockport.

He played professional cricket in the Yorkshire leagues and amateur rugby for various clubs! Sadly he had a poor end working in the mines and drinking too much and when he died in 1930 he was buried in a paupers grave.

Arthur Wharton was born in Ghana in 1865. In 1883, he moved to Darlington where he began his amazing sporting career.

Arthur became the first black professional footballer, the first official fastest man, a professional cricketer and a rugby player.
