I think I've heard, via youthful interest in philatelic matters: something about what is now the Sindh province of Pakistan -- a once-independent country (long ago, way before Pakistan was born or thought of) -- post-conveying-wallahs, and stamp: referred to in the orthography of the time, as Scinde Dawk.

What is an aglet?

I only learnt what those were. the plastic end covering of shoelaces, having always bought my shoelaces from Timpsons where I was told the name of them and without fail, after a couple of weeks, one shoelace had divested itself of its aglet, which help to pass through the shoe holes easily.

That is indeed the thing described, gentlemen. I admit to never having encountered the word, prior to approx. an hour ago -- looking for inspiration, at gen. knowl. quizzes on another board. (The "Shorter Oxford" tells us that an aglet can also be a metallic tag, pendant or spangle, worn as an ornament; or a tagged point hanging from the shoulder upon the breast of certain uniforms -- whence "aiguillette"; but its primary meaning, is the shoelace thingy.)
