This is proving more challenging than I'd expected - perhaps you had to be a child at the right time! Clue time: The troupe was aimed primarily at children and performed on BBC Radio 2.

A further clue: The original name was Versewagon, after the vehicle (a VW campervan) they toured the country in. What was that name changed to by the late 80s?

As promised: The answer is Circus of Poets, which lasted until the late 90s, and regrouped briefly in, I believe, 2014. Information on Versewagon and Circus of Poets is pretty scarce, but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to their radio programmes as a child.

That takes me back more years than I care to remember, when wrestling was a feature of weekend television viewing. He fought under the name of Kendo Nagasaki and every opponent seemed intent in tearing off his head mask.
