Ok, given the lack of interest the answer is Johnny Stompanato aka. "Johnny Stomp".

Featured, as Mickey Cohen's bodyguard, in several of Elmore Leonard's novels where he mixes real characters and events with fiction. The most notable being "LA Confidential", which was turned into the titular movie. Reputed to be blessed in the trouser snake department and had a relationship with fading Hollywood star Lana Turner in the late '50's. It is alleged that Stompanato became jealous of the attention that Sean Connery was paying Turner while they worked together on a film and Stompanato flew to England and threatened Connery with a gun, which apparently didn't go quite to plan as Connery took the gun off Stompanato and administered a beating.

Stompanato was stabbed to death by Turner's daughter a short while later, ruled as justified homicide as she claimed Stompanato had been beating her mother at the time, but rumours abounded that Connery was actually responsible in some way, leading to Connery having to go into hiding for fear of retribution from LA gangsters.

One of those countries from the former Yugoslavia, which I can never remember cos it's so long (ago and length!).
