I had a bit of an unfair advantage: long ago, my brother and I -- with perhaps delusions of grandeur, re attaining fame and fortune as the new Kenneth Grahame -- embarked on writing a daft tale about the doings of assorted anthropomorphised Australian fauna who lived in a village in the supposed "Humpty Doo Jungle" in the north of Australia. Sadly or otherwise, it never got off the ground...

In the year 1683, the biggest historical happening in Britain was probably the abortive Rye House Plot: featuring plans by religio-political opponents, to assassinate King Charles II and his brother the future James II. Somewhat -- not hugely -- further afield, a probably more significant historical event took place in that year. What was it?

Archers will have been involved in the event concerned; but with a small "a" -- no connection with Eddie Grundy and all that lot.

Lots of people died; and there were certain results in the regime-change area, some way down the line; but Hanover / Hanoverians were not involved.

Interesting -- I didn't know this about the Ashmolean; but indeed, the event which I'm after, did not occur in the British Isles.

The battle of Vienna. Basically it was the start of decline - or you could argue the end of expansion - of the Ottoman Empire. I think the other side was a loose Christian coalition of The Holy Roman Empire and others .

Correct ! Vienna had been besieged for a couple of months, by invading Ottoman armies; with the arrival of a Polish force under Poland's King John III Sobieski (am sticking a bit with the Polish theme of recent days), the ensuing Battle of Vienna, September 1683, meant defeat for the Ottomans, and their sending-back eastward -- they indeed never penetrated that far west again.

Your turn to dramatically bring deliverance.

Close enough. It is actually the Lanthanides from Lanthanum to Lutetium. Rare earths include the lanthanides but also include Scandium and Yttrium. Etc.

BTW are you allocated to Gateshead, are dual braked and have no train heat?
