Staying with Jules Verne, in Around the World in 80 Days, the travellers arrive back in London, convinced that the wager has been lost, but in fact, they won. How was this so?
Is it something to do with heading east around the globe, and crossing the International Date Line causes them to "gain" (if that's the right word) a day - so they think it's one day later than it actually is when they return to London?

That is essentially the right answer, by travelling East, they lose 4 minutes for every degree of longitude. they have witnessed 80 sunrises and sunsets on their journey, while London has seen only 79. Passpartout, in seeking out a minister for Phileas Fogg's marriage learns the date is December 21st and not the 22nd as they thought.
