Isnt this akin to the ashes? In other words something to do with a game - historical but not test cricket but instead Rugby Union?

Close enough. It dates back to 1925 when neither the referee or the two team captains in the match between England and New Zealand. A coin was loaned by a NZ supporter who was so pleased that NZ won the game he had the coin specially embossed. It was "rediscovered" in 1987 and has been used at the opening game of the Rugby world cup tournament ever since.
