No. I probably worded it a bit clumsily. I meant to say the thing in common was unique to those three. (ie they also had things in common with other people such as two legs etc)

One was a presidential candidate at the 1860 Republican national convention (Abraham Lincoln secured this nomination) and the other was the first and only Whig justice of the US Supreme Court.

Jefferson Davies, later the President of the Confederacy, might have been the first one?

Am afraid not. Davies was affiliated with the Democrats prior to the Civil War.
Salmon P. Chase & William H. Seward? Both were presidential candidates at the 1860 Republican convention, but neither were on the Supreme Court at the time, although Chase would be appointed to the Supreme Court in December 1864 by President Lincoln.
One more clue, if to speed this along and give someone else a chance: Roger B. Taney was the Chief Justice presiding over the Dred Scott case.

Has to be Maclean and Curtis. Well that was what my daughter was taught in American High School ( in rural Missouri) . Still widely derided as a disgusting and worse decision ever of the SCOTUS.

Correct on both counts. Their full names were Benjamin Robbins Curtis & John McLean. And it's hard to argue against that assessment, both for how overtly & disgustingly racist it was and the damage it helped inflict on a national scale. In this particular instance, history will continue to remember the dissenters more positively than it ever has the majority.

Wasn’t there an Austro-Hungarian battleship called Sankt Istvan, which was some sort of a sop to the Hungarians? But what Istvan translates as I have no idea.

Stephen or John are good shouts too.
I pronounce this as success on your part -- what with the crazy (or at least non-Indo-European) Hungarian language, liable to be a sore trial to the likes of us. "Istvan" is the Hungarian equivalent of Stephen. This Saint Stephen is not the first martyr as per the New Testament, but a later Stephen: lived 975 -- 1038 A.D.; last Prince of the Hungarians, first King of Hungary.
