There was an HMS Merrythought in a book, probably lightweight detective fiction, that I read not so long ago. However, that is probably not the origin of the word.

There is a toy manufacturer by that name, which is why I was careful to use a lower case "m", but the noun "merrythought" predates it by several decades at least.
Don't really know what I was thinking of ...
Until I read this I thought it was to do with Jiminy Cricket singing 'When you wish upon a star'.

I was sure it was Kevin Keegan was but then realised the buying club was Hamburg. A guess at Gordon McQueen from Leeds United to Manchester United.

Interesting. He was not the player I had in mind - however McQueen was apparently sold for £500,000 so technically not OVER £500,000.

Souness? Went from Middlesbrough to Liverpool around that time, although something inside my head said he went for less than Dalgleish, who went from Celtic to Liverpool for £440k.

Sorry for the delay I have been out all afternoon. That is correct. As you say he never played for England (except at u-23 level). Perhaps even more surprisingly the transfer was from Middlesbrough to West Brom in 1979. I suspect the reason it is not well known is one month later Brian Clough smashed the record by signing Trevor Frances for over a million.
