Bangles and Dire Straits had sisters and brothers within their line-ups. The other two I know nothing about but perhaps they are the same ?

Two left, still to get. Hints: Henri Castang created by a British author; but he (the detective, not the author !) is a citizen of, and working in, countries of the European continent. The author wrote earlier mysteries featuring a different detective hero -- a national of yet another Continental country -- which books were adapted for TV (the Castang ones have not been, to the best of my knowledge).

Matt Scudder, creation of an American author: lives in New York, and does his detecting there and in the surrounding area. A significant feature of the books, is that the aforenamed hero is a recovering alcoholic.

Time to put this one to bed, I think. Three correct answers given; the remaining two:

Henri Castang: author, Nicolas Freeling (also creator of -- as per preceding post -- the Dutch detective Van der Valk)

Matt Scudder: author, Lawrence Block


@perryman, @LSWR Cavalier, @peri : each of you answered one, correctly. Would a "tie-breaker" between the three of you, be acceptable -- if I were to name one more detective: whichever one of you first correctly named the relevant author, would have the floor to set the next question?

This should be quite easy, there are many right answers but I only want two for each abbreviation: What do/did these abbreviations refer to?

1. BBC
2. DDR
