I think 2 is David Cameron, whom I shall never forgive for sanctioning the electrification of the GWR (and if he didn't I'll still blame him anyway!)

Im sure he’d bite your hand off for that to be the most unforgivable thing he did

Have heard the name, believe he is or was (must be getting on a bit) a French footballer. Perhaps the first to command a fee to go to PSG so let's try Lionel Messi ?

Having read the initial question again............

It must be Mandzukic who scored Croatia's 2nd goal and thus the last player to score in a World Cup final ?

I will accept that answer. Lucien Laurent scored the first ever goal at a world Cup and Mandzukic is currently the last player to score a goal at a world Cup.

The floor, or should it be platform, is yours

I vaguely remember that due to calendar change Newtons birthday is either Christmas day or early January, so could be two possible answers, not that I know either of them, other than 16something.
You are on the right lines, it was 4th Jan but which 16xx year ?

5) Was 1978 - I remember the headlines from the summer holidays just before I went to boarding school, which was at the end of August 1978.

( I'm pretty sure we've also had this question very recently? )

You are correct, however unfortunately beaten to the answer by someone who guessed earlier, her date of birth 25th July 1978.

Actually I think I confused myself, given that he lived to a reasonable age and died in the first half of the 18th century then he probably was born before 1666.
My 1872 was both wrong and a typo!

As a better guess I will try 1652
