Just after the beginning of World War 2 the RAF established a base near New Zealand. What was the base and how far from New Zealand was it?

RAF Compton Bassett was close to Calne but was a radar training unit with no airfield. The nearest RAF airfield I can think of was RAF Yatesbury, part of which was renamed RAF Cherhill. Both now closed.

I'm sorry to say, none of these. The hamlet of New Zealand sat virtually on the southern end of the base, which was a big one. It operated from 1940-2011 and is now an MoD depot. If I mention Royal Wootton Bassett with which it is synonymous for very sad reasons, that should give it away. All operations are now carried out from Brize Norton.
