There is of course also Herbie Sutcliffe who was opening bat. He played for Yorkshire and at one time he and Percy Holmes also had the highest 1st class record for 1st wicket partnership. Ken Barrington also had quite a fantastic record.

Sorry that is two guesses. (I have not said Jack Hobbs because although good, I don't think he had a huge average).

Yay!

Marnus Labuschagne is our man.

He averages 63.43 to put him second, just ahead of his team mate Steve Smith (62.84). Bradman obviously miles clear at the top with his average of 99.94

Interestingly, of the 60 players with averages over 49, Labuschagne is the only one who has been out in all of his innings, so he doesn’t have an average boosted by any “red inkers”

Balfour is definitely one (I know because of the Balfour declaration etc). Heath has already been mentioned. Pitt the Younger has already been mentioned - cant think of the fourth but I think it was a long time ago as in over 250 years ago.

Yes, Edward Heath, Arthur Balfour and Pitt the Younger. The other was indeed over 250 years ago: Spencer Compton followed Walpole as First Lord of theTreasury and so was Prime Minister, albeit only for two years, 1742 - 1743.
