Hmm so unlikely to be Bill Bryson even though he often talks about Des Moines Iowa. He is also not in his late 70s. Just cant think at the moment. He also tends not to write novels.

The answer is Owen Meany, title character of A Prayer For Owen Meany, as was correctly identified a John Irving book and for what it’s worth one of my favourite works of fiction.

It would indeed. The Oxford Bar is John Rebus's favourite pub, the car is the Morris Oxford, Firoz Kassam is a former chairman of Oxford FC after whom their ground is named, and the Oxford is a type of formal men's shoe.
