Totally in the "facetious" department -- it crossed my mind as to whether the connection might be that they all got their schooling at Fettes College, Edinburgh ? (If I'm right, Bob Hope was British-born; and the establishment concerned is, nowadays, co-educational -- but unlikely to have been so in the 1870s...)

The author of The Railway Children is Edith Nesbet - so if Fettes was not co-educational in the 1870's, I doubt that she would have gone there. Bob Hope was born in Eltham, SE London, so not sure why he would have been educated at Fettes.
