Not all -- though the (relatively small) region concerned, did spend some three centuries under Turkish rule.

So thinking outside the box is it almost nothing to do with Arabia etc and something really out of left field like Eastern Europe? Austro-Hungarian empire or similar.
My bolding: you've become decidedly warm -- though not scalding hot. The region had, historically, a little to do with Hungary; but more with various other countries around the eastern end of Europe.

Well after all your clues it has to be Moldova - that is all that is left I think.
Moldova it is: known (give or take small territory-ownership differences) before the 1940s, as Bessarabia (English version -- slight spelling / pronunciation differences vis-a-vis local languages). Was under Turkish rule; then a province of the Russian Empire; part of Romania 1920 -- 1940; spent Word War II as a "football"; annexed at end of WWII by the Soviet Union, as the Moldavian SSR; independent state of Moldova since 1991.

People are generally a bit taller these days than 100 years ago so I'll go with three recent Commanders in Chief:

Not a bad try but one of them is wrong.
I'm thinking it is Reagan - he looked tall against Margaret Thatcher and HM Queen, but maybe it was deceptive. I'm tending to think that one of the war presidents was tall, maybe Woodrow Wilson, Franklin Roosevelt or Eisenhower.

Sorry no - btw - because of the psychological preference (proven) of American voters for tall candidates yes they all were tall but not the correct answer.
So we have Lincoln at number 1 and Trump at number 3 - just missing number 2.
