Yes, it is the rear of a rotary dialing mechanism, complicated bit of kit ain't it? They even had a little centrifugal speed governor to control the rate of the pulses.

Portland's also the only one with no letter "E"?
Portland is the only one which is also a product / brand name, as in Portland Cement.
There is a Newcastle Castle, a Leeds Castle and a Portland Castle. Although there are a lot of castles in Fife there is no "Fife Castle".
