Hi if you access a couple of the threads on the quiz section on an Android device there is one of those annoying fake Anti-vitus malware warning coming up. Can one of the mods have a look. I would guess it has come from a link to a picture site somewhere on the forum.

Ah but you can't because the phone freezes up once on the offending thread. I've deleted and reinstalled Chrome to sort.

Yes recently swapped over to Chrome will go back to another browser.

I think it is clue time. This is an antarctic explorer during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. During one notable event the following description of them was provided.

One of the memories that comes to me from those days is singing at the tiller. He always sang while he was steering, and nobody ever discovered what the song was. It was devoid of tune and as monotonous as the chanting of a Buddhist monk at his prayers; yet somehow it was cheerful.

I guess it's going to need to be answer time, I'm surprised this one wasn't answered sooner i thought polar exploration would be something people may know a little more about.

The explorer was called Tom Crean, he joined Discovery in New Zealand after another member of Discovery deserted.

The quote comes from Terra Nova expedition. Crean, Teddy Evans and William Lashley were part of the original 16 who were heading for the pole. they made it as far as the final group at 168 miles from the pole when Scott made the decision they were to head back to Cape Evans, a walk of 700 miles. It was during the journey back that Crean made the remark to Evans as they had to cross a number of ice bridges which stood betwen them and a 200 ft drop. later on Evans developed scurvey and was being hauled in the sleigh by Crean and Lashley, it got to the point where they ran out of rations and energy and resorted to decide that Crean needed to complete a 35 mile solo walk (which he did in 16 hours) in order to save the life of Lashley and Evans. It is a remarkable story and would reccomend to anyone Creans Biography (Tom Crean: Unsung Hero) or Teddy Evans autobiography (South with Scott).
