The two best selling vehicles in the United States are both pick up trucks. Prior to the 70's these and what are now known as SUV's (sports utility vehicle e.g LR Discovery etc) were very basic lacking refinements as even a radio, heater or any sound deadening & were very much working vehicles.

The question is - what caused the creation of a massive market in trucks as a main vehicle and lead to the development and sales boom of the ubiquitous SUV in the USA & elsewhere?

Wasn't there some sort of tax on normal cars which were a 'luxury' item but SUVs were exempt as they were 'working' vehicles?

Correct- there was no luxury tax on working vehicles so the car manufacturers starting putting more luxury features into trucks and that morphed into the SUV. It never really applied in the UK as until quite recently there was a rule that meant you could only have one side window each side to qualify as a commercial vehicle. Your gas guzzling floor.

The character you got wrong was in number 1, the line isn't uttered by Bo 'The Bandit' Darville (Burt Reynolds) it is used by Cleatus 'The Snowman' Snow. Quite early in the film when Bandit Screams away from a set of traffic lights in the Trans Am and enquires of the snowman "How am I lookin".

Correct, it was a Greek vessel, the Diamantes, which was on its way to Barrow in Furness, it was sunk by Submarine U35 off Sceilig Mhichíl, it was reported the crew were off-loaded before the boat was sank and then they were taken to Ventry. It was rumoured locally that the captain of the German Submarine had spent time in the west Kerry gaeltacht before the war as he is alleged to have told the crew 'Give my best wishes to Mickey Long' who was the local Lloyds agent.

The moon rocks are estimated to be over 3 billion years and I guess they have them at the NASA Space Centre in Houston, TX.
