Blimey - that's a blast from the past for me.
It's a short story by Robert A Heinlein that I read years ago. His profession was something that we wouldn't regard as particularly unpleasant today, but I can't remember what it was. Something along the lines of Politician, Tax Inspector, Newspaper editor, you know sort of looked down upon but not particularly bad.

Nope - Both send their carriers out to sea with just a Captain in command (when we had some, of course)

I believe in the USN the captain is usually American while in the RN the captain is normally British.

A US Captain is an actual Captain and an Aircraft carrier can have more than one Captain. RN Captains can have any rank and is the dude or dudette who is The Captain of the ship.
By extension can any UK rank therefore be The Captain but on a US carrier if you were an Admiral you would still be the Admiral and not The Captain

The Captain on a Royal Navy carrier is actually ranked captain. On a US carrier the Captain may be of a different rank?

Indeed - US Federal Law requires all USN carrier Captains to be qualified pilots. During WW2, there was an incident that had a destroyer Captain take the Enterprise out - caused a great stir
