If not transporting an individual to space, did they offer to send Laika over for a visit? Or perhaps to broadcast a US message from a Sputnik sattelite.

Laika did not return to earth - her body burnt up in early 1958...

No, they did not offer to do a broadcast, but it was related to rocketry - albeit in a funny manner

Laika never returned to earth. She died in space.

Apologies, I seem to have conflated Laika with the return of other space animals last night.

Given the time of year, did they offer to send a Christmas card or broadcast a carol via satellite?

Didn't the Russians supply arms to the rebel armies in the country at one time?

Mind you, if they did, I can't see what it has to do with space flight - assuming that this isn't a very big red herring, of course! Also, how can this be humorous?
