I assume you mean the Virgin Mary as a "marionette" I doubt you want "Puppeteer" or "puppet master" but they are the only names I can think of :/

I'm beginning to suspect that this Nina Conti has picked up some obscure word and is using it pretentiously, after all what's wrong with puppeteer and marionettist and who's to say they are not correct? Is she some kind of etymological authority?

Can you provide a source for this other than Nina Conti? While I can find the use of the word "manipulation" referring to the operation of puppets nowhere can I find a puppeteer referred to as a manipulator.

The earliest term I can find is "Sutradhara" which is an Indian term for the "manipulator" and that goes back 4000 years.
Puppetry has existed since ancient egypt and ancient rome. I'm not sure where she got her information from either but the term for the operator of Marionette is a marionettist. Puppets have Puppetters. For the life of me I remember somehting about the punch and judy puppetter having a special name too. Same with the shadow puppets from Chinese theatre but again I cant remember their names either. ( I was young when I learned about those)
