That's exactly what it is, to be precise it is probably an OC71 (very common in the 1960s) with the black paint removed, or never applied, to allow it to be used as a phototransistor.

He visited his brother who was the First Gunnery Officer - he went aboard her when she layed over in Norway and met with his brother and the Captain. His friends (who had come along for the ride) went down the ladder first which makes him the last person to disembark from the Bismarck before she was sunk (people abandoning ship do not count according to naval regulations)
