You're right about Peter - the main source of Mark's gospel is thought to be the preaching material and memories of Peter.

But what about the first part of the question - what was the incentive which caused them to record that material?

Yes, but then all four gospels were intent on doing that, more or less.

The gospel was transmitted by word of mouth for the first 30 years or so, and it was only when the first witnesses were facing death that the need for a record for any future generations was realised.

The incentive which caused Mark's gospel to be recorded, was the Neronian Persecution of AD64, when there was the real danger the tradition could be lost.

Peter was martyred in Rome, and it was mainly his memories, preaching-material, etc, which Mark hastily recorded.

Marton was right with part of the question - ie Peter being the main source of the gospel - so I'll award it to Marton to set the next one.

My point was that each of the four Gospels has a different slant to them. I cannot remember off the top of my head but it's something along the lines of one showing his place in the Old Testament (Matthew), one his humanity (by Luke, the doctor), one showing his divinity (Mark??) and one that we may believe (John) (see, very sketchy memory ).

But in terms of the answer you were looking for, fair enough.

The OLD power station was in use from 1890s and was demolished in the fifties. I don't believe the millenium bridge was there then. Sorry to be pedantic. Welshman is still correct as he gave the answer that was wanted.
