In the 50's & 60's there was a job that no longer exists in the UK. This job was predominantly staffed by women but became very popular with gay men because they could meet without risk of arrest. What was the job and why did men take over from women? --- old post above --- --- new post below ---
As no one has taken a guess it was working the night shifts at the old manual telephone exchanges. Women generally didn't/or weren't allowed to work these late shifts. When being gay was still clandestine this job became a popular meeting place as well as way of connecting like minded people via their exchanges. Open floor.
