A tri-part qurstion here!

A very famous acrobat, who died in September 1986, had a very narrow escape from death 49 years earlier. His signature act was known around the world and he performed it for roughly 40 years ( including on skates and on one earlier occasion on top of a skyscraper with no safety equipment ) until his retirement in the early 1970s.


Who was he, what was his main act and from what was his narrow escape?

His main act was to act drunk and climb a gas lampost to attempt to light a cigarette, the lampost the proceeds to sway.
He survived the Hindenburg crash.

Lucky I was watching a documentry about the Hindenburg earlier or I would never have attempted this.
