It was around this time that the Vatican underwrote a lot of exploration. Was he a papal envoy or monk?

Nothing to do with the Vatican.

His journey started in 1340 and lasted a year. The details of the journey were published in 1937.

Group of four? Was he part of the Beatles before they became famous but dropped out and got replaced?

Or am I thinking of someone else?

You are thinking of someone else. Stuart Sutcliffe was known as the fifth beatle
But your answer is as close as it is possible to get without being correct

the answers to these six questions all have something common: answer them all and identify the theme.

Which bowler took 202 wickets in 49 tests for England in the 1960s and 1970s?
What was formed from Fort William, Port Arthur and two smaller towns?
The Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868 ended a campaign by which chief of the Oglala Lokota?
What was the only UK number 1 best-selling single for Terry Jacks?
What is the common term for a last second attempt to score with a long pass in American football?
What is the title of Turner's 1844 painting featuring a steam locomotive?

The theme is weather.

1 is snow, 5 is hail, 6 rain. Don't know the others

ps at a guess, 3 is probably cloud

going through other kinds of weather, was Terry Jacks responsible for Seasons in the Sun?

If the two guesses are right that just leaves 2, which I haven't got the faintest, but surely must be thunder or lightning?

2. Thunder Bay
3. Red Cloud
4. Seasons in the Sun
5. A 'hail Mary' play
6. Rain, Steam and Speed

Who played for Newport County FC in the morning, and Newport RFC in the afternoon?

:)

The Eastern Valleys Brass Band, the Godfrey Road Barbershop Quartet, the George Formby Appreciation Society (Griffithstown Branch), some bloke with harp and beard who'd been exiled from Llangollen for playing "Sheep May Safely Graze" and Catatonia before they were famous all share this honour...

Dunno if I was right or not, but here's one to keep the thread alive:

Which EU country shares a land border with Brazil?
