Ouch - considering AFC and not MK, only Norwich are in the top three divisions at present! hock: Even Franchise FC are only in League One.

No, wait, Norwich is an error. Coventry City (1987), via the FA Cup. Which makes the above fact sound even worse, considering they are also in League One.

Close, but no cigar. Norwich had a European adventure in 1994-95 season, Jeremy Goss scoring a particularly fine goal in a 2-1 win at Bayern Munich

Forest won the European cup in 1979 and 1980, Derby got to teh semis in teh early/mid 70s. derby & Forest both won the league under Brian Clough

Wha?! Someone needs to do some more research

HINT: Forest have a unique claim to fame among European clubs. They are the only club to have won the European Cup and Champions' League combined more than their own domestic league. This was made all the better by the fact that Forest qualified for the 1978-79 European Cup after winning the First Division in their first season back in the top flight after promotion!

I cannot think of or find any teams that match the criteria. The only remaining London team that could have qualified for Europe were West Ham United - but they have appeared on several other occasions, including reaching the Cup Winners' Cup Final.

Another clue, the ban was lifted the year they qualified through league position, which, prior to the ban, because of the coefficient rating of English teams would have seen them qualify. Only 3 places were given the first year back and Liverpool (Champions) did not appear as they were still banned

Crystal Palace were the team I was looking for (I will admit getting my dates mixed up) and I also apologise for not being specific that with Europe I was meaning the 3 major trophies, as Oxford have also played in both versions of the Anglo-Italian cup, though in it's revival, we never played an Italian club, which means Oxford have also 'played in Europe'.

In most people's view the Inter-Toto cup was for qualification into the UEFA cup, not a competition in it's own right as often a final was never played.

Any one club's success can generally be measured by their performances in head-to-head statistics in competitive matches against their rivals. I do not believe there is any one club in the English league to have a "perfect" record, although Manchester United are very close, with only one bogey club. This is commonly cited as being Chelsea, but this is not correct as this only applies to the Permier League era and not to the game as whole.

So which English club does have a positive competitive record against United?

HINT: This club's record against Manchester City is pretty dire. Thus, the answer is obviously not City either.

Well Oxford United have always been pretty good against Manchester United at home in league and cup, but we've been awful away, so I doubt it's us, but I'll give it a punt nonetheless.

Amazingly, Bournemouth, Norwich and Oxford have all lost precisely one game too many for them to be able to say they have not lost more than 50% of their matches against United! Bournemouth have lost 5 out of 8, Norwich have lost 32 out of 63 and Oxford have lost 9 out of 16.

You are all correct in that the club in question is on the London side of an imaginary line between the Severn Estuary and The Wash.

Portsmouth can at least claim to have avoided defeat on more than 50% on their meetings with United, having only lost 35 matches out of 74. But they have still lost more than they have won.

The club in question have won exactly one game more against United than United have against them.
