That would be the eruption of Tambora, the largest ever recorded and also the deadliest.
Now you have what I was looking for. When Mount Tambora exploded, it was over 14,000 feet in height and the magma chamber was contained within the top layer of the mountain.
It was the only human historical recorded volcanic explosion to have reached the level of VEI 7 on that scale.
