Three answers have mentioned horses / horse racing.

They were indeed horses, but not racehorses. As an extra clue, all eight of them were grey

Sleep? The man has 13 kids - twelve called And(y) and one called Over(draft).

Many people remember the 1977 centenary cricket test, but fewer remember the one in 1980 that commemorated 100 years since the first test match in England, the 1977 one being for 100 tears since the first test match in Australia.
Three Australians, Greg Chappell, Rodney Marsh and Denis Lillee were in the team for both matches.
Who was the only English player to play in both matches?
