The only defunct uk record companies I can think of are A&M, Charisma, Chrysalis & Pye. Any of those perhaps ?

I’ve just remembered I’m working daft shifts for the next few days so seeing as nobody seems too close I’ll explain the answer and declare open floor

The answer is Factory Records, legendary Manchester record label founded by the late Tony Wilson of Granada Reports and So It Goes fame, and erstwhile home of Joy Division, New Order, Happy Mondays, Electronic, the criminally underrated Durutti Column etc etc

Most labels have their own catalogue numbers which they give to releases in addition to the usual stuff like barcodes etc. Factory being Factory, they took it a step further and issued catalogue numbers to pretty much everything they created and a couple of things they didn’t (like the cat)

So the specifics from the question:

FAC51 was the Hacienda, a former yacht showroom on Whitworth Street West in Manchester, converted at astronomical expense, and never profitable despite a period of massive popularity around the time of acid house

FAC191 was the Hacienda cat

FAC501 was Tony Wilson’s coffin

What increased by 70 on 1st May 1990, by a further 100 on 16th April 1995, and by a further 30 on 2nd April 2000?

Is it something to do with phone numbers? I’m pretty sure April 1995 was when most dialling codes went from 0xxx to 01xxx as I had to sort all the comms materials for where I worked at the time. So is that “a further 100”?

If that’s vaguely right, would the May 1990 one be splitting 01 into 071 and 081?

No idea about the April 2000 one though, so I could very well not just be barking up the wrong tree but also be n the wrong forest entirely
