Ah, I wondered who that was! I don't think I watched an entire episode ever, and didn't recognise the geezer's name, but just remember he used to turn up in random situations......I'm sure there was a golf and a pilot episode. My mum and dad used to watch it and enjoyed it for the lightweight nonsense that it was.

Many British Army officers carry swagger sticks or canes when on duty, but officers of the Royal Tank Regiment carry walking sticks known as ash plants. Why?
Historically, to poke deeper into the ground to see if it was too soft for their tank to drive on. I suspect it isn't needed much these days

Quite correct. It dates from the early days of tanks in World War I when the officer would walk ahead of the tank testing the ground. Not a job with a long life expectancy, I suspect, although few were in those days.
