Whilst being on the subject of Christianity and its beliefs, in what gospel and part of the New Testament did the subject of the Paraclete first receive a mention?

It’s another word for Holy Spirit. As for which gospel, take your pick out of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John.

The question did ask which was the first of those in which mention was made and the actual part of it.
(Being a Classics scholar, the word Paraclete comes from that Greek word-base. An interesting aside is there were discussions in the middle section of the first millennium between the Byzantine Christian theologians and the learned Muslim theologians as to the nature of the Paraclete as it exists in the beliefs of both creeds)

I take it that in this particular context: going directly to the Bible, would be cheating -- general-knowledge quizzes being essentially about what one has, or doesn't have, in one's head !

Not appertaining to this particular quiz question, but some Biblical quotes appear in world-wide events. For many years, I have seen the best-known of these displayed on large banners...John 3:16.
The answer I seek is best answered in that manner, as it gives both of the requirements.
Concerning this particular exercise, I find myself a bit Matthew 26:41 -- well, sort-of (this isn't an attempt at answering the present conundrum; just a comment on the overall situation).

Historically, the gospel of Luke was the first to be written. So on that basis I will say Luke.

Whilst Luke was said to be the first gospel to be written, it was not the gospel in which the subject of this quiz question was first written.

And so sticking to my beliefs it must be when Jesus came to John the Baptist in Mark chapter 1 and said something like I baptise you with water but he will baptise you with Holy Spirit. I think it is Mark 1 vs 8.

Remember that the original question made reference to the first mention of a Paraclete, not the date when the gospel was written.

- Mark: Written around 66–70 AD
- Matthew: Written around 85–90 AD
- Luke: Written around 85–95 AD
