A lucky guess on my part; while I think fish are cute, I don't know a lot about them. Thank you, anyway.

There is a novel, written roughly mid-20th-century -- pretty well-regarded by the reading intelligentsia -- whose setting is Gdansk in Poland; though in a time before the city had that name or nationality. The novel -- widely translated -- was originally written by a non-Anglophone author, in their language (maybe a bit of bit of a clue -- said lingo not Polish, either). Please give name of the author, and of the novel (in language of your choice, within reason !).
