General knowledge quiz discussion

As some may have seen, I'm reasonably active in the general knowledge quiz. I'm curious as to where people get their questions from, and if possible, a spoiler or 3 about possible up coming questions.

I just keep a need for quiz questions (not just for here) in the back of my mind when I’m going about my day and as and when I see, here or read anything I think’s a bit interesting I add it to a list I have in a note on my phone. Then when I need a question I pick from there

I spend much of my day in my ‘den‘/office where the iPad lives permanently. As things that I read on it or elsewhere often pique my curiosity I frequently find myself following things up on the internet, which usually leads to another thing and… If I come across something that looks like it could make an interesting question, I check it and then jot a few words down on a piece of paper that sits in a pile of paper on the desk. When I need a question, I look out the paper, choose a question, recheck its details and post.

I use a couple of quizzing games on my phone which is where I find my questions. If I'm asked 1 that is quite obscure, I make a note of it. Occasionally though, I do use Google to research something, which is where 1 or 2 questions do come from.

Some upcoming question subjects from me include: Films, classical music and money.

I do struggle to come up with questions at times but I also don't like declaring open floor too much either. I have recently been attending a trivia quiz night here in the USA. A huge number of questions of course are US themed but I do come up with some interesting ones to use on this forum. The science question last night was way too easy - what does Hg mean on the periodic table?

That's Mercury, but I'd then have been struggling to say that it derives from the Latin 'hydrargyrum' which means liquid silver.

I knew some people who set questions for TV shows (freelance), 15-1 and the like. They got paid £50 per question and that was a while back, but there is a process involved like research, difficulty and so on.

I participate in the forum general knowledge quiz, and as you say, make a note of something interesting. Going to bamboozle everyone with the 'longest railway station name' in Wales at the weekend, which it is not the obvious.

Someone I used to know set questions for Mastermind and University Challenge, and she said it was a lot more difficult than she thought it would be

Your recent question about the late 19th century incarnation of the Loughborough Athletic and Football Club was a cracker. Not easy to correctly guess, either!

Hopefully, I'll get a chance of setting a question again soon. After being asked a question in 1 of my quiz apps, I did some research into it. The question I have in mind isn't going to be obvious what it is about either. As Bradley would say on The Chase, it's an absolute stinker.
