Fife North East was the seat which the SNP won by being two votes ahead of the Lib Dems. Both the SNP and Lib Dems got fewer votes than they got in 2015 with 3rd place Tories and 4th place Labour both increasing their vote share.

Just seen on BBC news. May is going to see the Queen later today, on the bases of support(not sure if it's a formal coalition yet) of the DUP.

Has also been made clear that despite any high price they extract from the Conservatives, they'll never attempt to put Corbyn in Number 10. Which pretty much rules out Labour being able to get a majority.

Conservative hold

The last seat left is Kensington. Whisper it quietly, but there might be a sting in the tail...

DUP are the kingmakers. This is really surreal.

Sounds like they're in discussions with the Conservatives already, unsurprisingly. Just come through that she's going to HMQE2 to seek permission to form a government. But not a formal coalition, so she won't hold a majority.

This is great. The Tories going to meet Her Maj and form a government off the back of support from a lunatic fundamentalist party endorsed by a proscribed terrorist group. Let the games begin.

Hope the Telegraph etc pick up on the nice arrangement and condemn the UDA's links to the DUP as strongly as they've condemned Corbyn polishing Gerry Adams' shoes. Chance would be a fine thing.

The whole thing will pass under the radar thanks to English ambivalence and ignorance of Northern Ireland.

At least the SDLP were completely eliminated, even in Foyle. That vote was mobilised primarily off the back of Brexit and DUP intransigence.

When the exit poll for the 2015 General Election came in it suggested the Conservatives would be just short of a majority and that working with the DUP was an option for getting them in to government. Although, of course it turned out the exit poll slightly underestimated the number of Conservative seats and they just got a majority.

It seems the YouGov poll which showed Labour and the Lib Dems gaining seats while the Conservatives and SNP lost seats was more accurate than most people thought.

Now if a joke candidate dressed in an Elmo costume had taken the seat from May, that would have been hilarious!

PM questions could be very interesting in the future! Opposition parties will have plenty of ammo to throw at May. She will only need a handful of MPs to rebel for anything controversial she tries to put through.

Paul Nutter has resigned. In his speech, he is highly critical of Theresa May calling the election in the first place.

Judging from his interview on BBC North West this morning even pro-Brexit Nigel Evans is very unhappy with a number of the policies that were included in the Conservative manifesto, so May has more to worry people than what a few pro-EU 'rebels' in her own party might do.

I'd forgotten about the Bad Bootle Meff.

He probably wants to spend more time playing professional football and finishing his PhD on the history of Conservatism in Liverpool (Paul, there's a reason why you didn't finish it!).

In Cheshire it seems the Lib Dem voters have mainly switched to Labour to get rid of Conservative MPs in Warrington South, Weaver Vale and Crewe & Nantwich and also to win City of Chester by almost 10,000 votes - the Conservatives top target seat!

While I'm not surprised Esther McVey won Tatton, it is unusal for a new person parachuted in to a safe seat to get as big a majority as their predecessor. Even in Tatton Labour got more votes than they have got in any election since 1992, despite there being both Green and Independent candidates.

I note that you chose not to mention my constituency of Macclesfield above, which remained Conservative, with David Rutley gaining 28,595 votes, a majority albeit reduced from 2015, was still a very healthy figure of 8,608.

The Liberal Democrats also failed to win back the two adjoining seats of Cheadle and of Hazel Grove that they lost to the Conservatives in the 2015 election and which stayed Conservative this time.

Andrew Neil to Gina Miller: "Do you think this will lead to an extreme breakfast?"

I just had an extreme breakfast this morning. Was very tasty.

I do love post election coverage. Sleep deprivation makes for brilliant telly.

Paul Nutter (leader UKIP): 28 November 2016 – 9 June 2017

Must say not very long.

I see also that he was shipped around!

2005 general election in Bootle
2010 general election in Bootle
2011 by-election in Oldham East and Saddleworth
2015 general election in Bootle
2017 by-election in Stoke-on-Trent Central
2017 general election in Boston and Skegness

Surely this would not be the only one! Imagion a PM in a stronghold of another party.

John McDonnell currently telling Andrew Neil that Labour could form a minority government without going in to coalition because most politicians wouldn't 'dare to vote against popular policies.'

How good is he at Mathematics?..... Does he seriously believe that the Conservatives with their number of seats would not overturn any such Labour flights of fancy.

Because of Corbyn's past view of the IRA, there is no way whatsoever that the DUP would ally themselves to Labour and as Sinn Fein electees never bother to sit in the House of Commons, that is 17 who will not feature in such an aspirational Labour pipe-dream. So look at the numbers still remaining.

We are told that Labour feel theirs was the true victory last night, despite being miles away from the 326 seat mark and gaining only a few seats more than they gained in the 2010 election.

In a post about voting patterns in Cheshire I mentioned the 4 marginal constituencies and my own constituency. I'm aware there's also no change to the winner in Congleton, Warrington North and Ellesmere Port & Neston so there's 2 seats the Conservatives were expected to hold and did that I didn't mention and also 2 that Labour were expected to hold and did. You could say my previous post was politically neutral.

Of course as it's 2017 Cheadle and Hazel Grove are Greater Manchester constituencies rather than Cheshire. ;)

Remember the aim of the General Election was for the Conservatives to increase their majority ahead of Brexit talks at a time when Labour and SNP popularity was seen as being lower than it was in 2015. Mrs May perhaps read the situation correctly in Scotland but misread it very badly in England (where it matters a lot more.)

Do please tell us how you feel about your beloved Conservative doing a deal with the UDA-backed DUP party, Paul.

Note that the leader of the DUP met the leader of the UDA just days after they shot dead a man in a supermarket car park.

Arlene Foster said she thought it'd be "difficult" for May to continue as PM.

Arlene Foster would know all about belligerently clinging on to an untenable position!

Paul Sidorczuk said:

Of course they won't.

But if we're criticising people for "working with terrorists", what is your view of Theresa May clinging on to power through a party who had a terrorist organisation actively campaigning for them, telling Unionists to vote DUP?

Tomorrow the Daily Mail will fill 5 - 6 pages of vitriol at the DUP just like they did with Corbyn......

Also don't forget a Conservative PM tried to cover up the fact that the SAS shot dead 3 unarmed IRA members in Gibraltar who they believed to have a bomb in their car. Yet when the car was searched there was no bomb in the car.

...and the UDA actively campaigned on behalf of the DUP in South Belfast.

I'm awaiting the Sun and the Mail coming out and criticising May for clinging on to power by fraternising with terrorists. It'll be along soon...any second now...

Rumour is on the 3rd recount Labour had it by a couple of votes but as one of the previous counts was in the Conservative's favour, the Tories demanded a 4th recount at which point the returning office sent the counters home to rest.

Lots of Tory MPs saying they are very uncomfortable at being propped up the DUP. Paul you cannot spin as anything other than a catastrophe for May, someone you have said you fully support in the past. She has gone from one bombshell to another! Her credibility is in tatters and the EU are now mocking her. She did not have to call this election, pure opportunism on her part and it backfired spectacularly.
