I've been reading with interest issues that seem to permeat these sites relating to the rise of a select group of people who demand royalty/respect for the release of their gen. In my book, gen is a free, public commodity. Even the non train enthusiast should be able to have access to, although they will probably in all likelihood not understand what 6W32 could refer to, this sort of information. It leaves me mystified as to why these people want to seek some form of royalty for it, or view it as some sort of status symbol. The person/persons with the most gen is the most respected. It sounds incredibly daft. Not really.
We as humans are competitive species. We see status as key to success in life. The high earning employee is more likely to be respected than the local dustman, because the high earning employee has worked and achieved far greater achievements and accolades in life than the dustman. The higher the status, the greater the respect. So why then do the runners of these gen sites find it necessary to question these minority groups on these gen sites, when all they are doing is trying to achieve a higher status and be respected for it? People on these sites should see these users as sources of information, because they have gone out and taken the trouble to find these rare loco movements. If they demand some sort of royalty for it, it really is a case of take it or leave it.
A similar forum to this exists saying that a lot of decent gen sites have recently closed because of these minority groups floating around in cyberspace. Why do they need to be this drastic? As I said, gen is a public commodity understood by a select few and incomprehensible to a greater majority.
